It is not that often that I find myself hanging out with folks who have a real Picasso drawing hanging in their bathroom, but I can do it.

What first impressed me about these folks and their guests was that they assembled a party in support of an adult musician and his fiancee. Many love supporting the young cute musician and his school, you could so like be the discoverer of an artist before he is discovered by the world and the New York Times. That is easy, unknown. After the dust settles for a few years, that is harder. I was impressed.

Then I was impressed a second time about a half hour into the party when the Rolfing SI questions began. What!? No pain questions? Instead try this: “Everyone wants to have someone have better structure, how is yours different?” (Emphasis on a different way of organizing, with functionality with good easy overall posture was the answer, in an “elevator” speech version.)

After some intelligent questions to flesh that answer out (haha) then an unusual question knocked me back a bit, but not to the point that I became a Wookie (“UUNNnHH”).

The question, “Is Rolfing SI international?” spoke to these not only cultured but accomplished business folks and how they could think of the Big Picture.

“Yes” came my answer. I couldn’t have said that when I first was certified, 1984.

I couldn’t say it when I needed a Rolfer™ in Japan, 16 years ago, and there were only 2 there, Americans who had come to study aikido. Germany and Brazil were dim versions of themselves as Rolfing SI nations then. Some of what happened in those places was that one charismatic person came and trained in the United States, and then inspired growth in their countries. (Now up to 50 Rolfers in Japan, last I heard.)

The countries have since outgrown their founders, and have schools and stories which have taken on their own flavors. Of course, they believe their own flavor is better.

Sadly, one can find hardly any trace of the international growth of Rolfing SI on the flagship website, the mother ship website, www.rolf.org.

You could try Google for: European Rolfing Association, Japanese Rolfing Association, Australian Rolfing Association, and Brazilian Rolfing Association. These groups elect representatives to the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration and expect the RISI to police trademark issues, but can’t be bothered to lobby to have a presence on the RISI site, which is used by people all over the world, and the US RISI has its own excuses for its provinciality.

As for that one Rolfer in Croatia, etc. good luck on finding that one. The lack of a big picture is obscuring the little picture, big time.

Let’s get this straight: every move a Rolfer™ makes advances a certain idea of structure. This idea is learned bit by bit, and with persistence, emerges as an integrative body/mind operating procedure that can be followed with individuals who present very diverse integrative issues.

Thusly, segmenting off the Standard Basic 10 Series of lessons in integration for the body, and then calling what follows after that “Advanced” is kind of goofy. (There, she called Ida Rolf “goofy”.)

Ida Rolf, a genius of putting things together, had a failure moment, to hear some of the old guard tell it, when she put together a Standard Advanced 4 Series to follow the Standard Basic 10. This series used the same ideas of a basic core/line of the body (that core/line was flexible, like a green willow stick), balance front to back in the body (is the top of the torso in front or behind the hips? good resilient lumbar curve?good resilient thoracic curve?), balance side to side in the body (one shoulder or hip higher? more weight on one leg?), balance top to bottom (grounding, lift).

Ida Rolf’s Advanced Series might go like this, depending on the person: an opening session, to take off the road wear with which the person shows up, basically the basic goals of the first 3 sessions except they are not a recapitulation, they go more into rotational issues which have shown up. 2). a core session, using a yoga posture where the person is sitting with legs out to the side, the so-called “Z” position. Hopefully this result shoots right up the front part of the spine and into the torso, recapitulating elements of the goals of the basic sessions 4,5,and 6. Then 3). comes a torso session which continues up into the head and neck, and may include the classic front-to-back “L” session, an outstanding riff on thegoals of the basic sessions 7 and 8. The Advanced 4th hour of that day was a recapitulation of the goals of 9 and 10 of the basic, and could include horizontalizing, joint work, all kinds of balance as needed.

So the Advanced Series has the same goals as the Standard Basic 10 Series? If so, why bother?

Once someone has been Rolfed, things are different. There is a deeper level presented. And by this, I definitely do not mean “deep tissue” massage level. We are talking the way the deepest rotations can come out after a while, even though we have observed that people tend to get better over a year’s time after their Basic 10. In other words, even though there seems to be a structure/movement force for good in the body reflecting and amplifying the original 10 series, sort of a homeostasis of structure/movement that lasts for about the first year after the series is completed.

However, gravity doesn’t stop when one leaves my office after their 10 series goals have been fulfilled, and the person’s handedness, footedness, and perceptual preferences such as earedness and eyedness don’t change that much, though they may have eased out in their devotion to one-sidedness in the original Basic 10. This means that the deepest parts of the body function which provides the structure are bubbling up, and presenting themselves to be worked with.

Think of some of those deeper levels: the liver is cooking away on the right side of your torso and the stomach on the left and they are busy providing structural segmentation as well.

And then as well as the visceral we have the head injuries, the scar tissue of various slings and arrows of fate, and bones themselves actually twisted in function, including their immediate wrapping, the periosteum, according to their devotion to internal or external rotation.

All this is grist for the mill of the advanced training, and working with these issues in the class of a couple of master teachers and orchestrators of the human condition is a life and practice changing class for many Rolfers.

(These days the Advanced Series is not limited to 4 sessions, although many can get a huge step ahead in a 5 series. Number of sessions is not set in stone for either the Basic or Advanced series. We are talking Goals of the Basic and Advanced.)

Other Rolfers are ho-hum and don’t take the Advanced class. I personally wouldn’t go to one of those ho-hummers, especially if they have been practicing for over 5 years, unless there was not an Advanced Certified person around. You can determine who these people are at www.rolf.org. Don’t get me wrong, I did good work as a new Rolfer, and there are those out there who can do that, too. I’m saying the ho-hummers can’t individualize the work of orchestration in such a profound way.

I’ve taken the Advanced Class twice and might do it again, I’m still learning from my colleagues. I’m making do with taking a one-week Spine in Motion class in June with a couple of favorite teachers, one a Rolf Movement teacher and the other a member of the Advanced Faculty. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from my fellow students, too.

Just the facts, ma’am. Last night. Philadelphia Orchestra. Tschaikovsky 4th Symphony. The conductor: Jaap van Zweden.

Van Zweden is here for his 3rd subscription series that I have heard, and the time has not been kind to him. On his first appearance here (that I noticed) I was favorable, though most put him on a very long list for the potential conductor post for the PhilOrch for which Yannick Nezet-Seguin later was hired.

The results with the orchestra are. very. not. legato. where. it. needs to be. legato. Of course, the PhilOrch is noted for its sound, which basically has a lot of fire and sweep, tenderness when needed, connected and sometimes maybe a little too much so, especially in Tschaikovsky. The PhilOrch sound can be really corny, especially in the Rachmanoff style overkill of the orchestra programmer Jeremy. Think of the bad pictures painted by Rubens now hanging in the Barnes Museum where all the ladies have oh-so-pink cheeks and rotundity. (Barnes was showing how a great artist can be crass, there are good Rubenses in there, too.)

Van Zweden seemingly wanted to avoid that problem, and he was definitely successful.

Here’s how he did it. Control, baby, control. The arms can swing and sway, but they actually don’t seem to be able to go above his eyebrows, and mostly they hover tensely from his collarbone to his elbow. The left hand/arm can occasionally go a little above head height if he is having a flight of excitement, but mostly it is stern and stiff. I only saw his right hand hand/arm go over his head, slightly, once, and to do that he had to bend backward at the waist, his torso won’t bend backwards, too much hump.

When both arms are raised, his head is even more sharply in trouble through jutting out. How? through tension in the front-of-the-chest arm muscles, the major and minor pectoralis and the intercostal rib muscles. He is slumped with tension, in other words. Bend over and pick up a stool with a lot of bound strength, like the stool weighed a few hundred pounds, and you will see how it feels, keep the tension, set the stool down, and try to stand up and wave your arms like seaweed.

Now you are Jaap van Zweden, and if you stay down there with muscles, the connective tissue will take over and institutionalize the forward head and the hump.

The head goes more sharply forward when his arms are raised. It is an interesting contradiction, the loose arms and shoulders at some points and the very slumped tight chest still. When he wants the music to flow, he waves his arms like seaweed but there is always the oh-so-damaging tight torso and neck.

The music suffers. The orchestra doesn’t look all that happy. I asked around a bit and discovered that van Zweden likes to bust on people, being very direct about their transgressions.

Sort of like a bad 4th grade teacher, he doesn’t let the group play. (Sorry, all you ISTJ’s out there.) It seems he is constantly shushing, hand in their faces, and the constricted sound is part of that technique. His favorite expressive gesture, hunching and putting his palm in the orchestra’s face, plays out especially uncomfortably with the winds.

The years are not kind to him. A moderately talented band conductor now comes to mind, one whose rhythm is intensely interested in the beat of the bass drum, 4 square in the key of Bb to the end.

I was busy doing my Bugs Bunny imitation at the Buckstaff Bathhouse at the Hot Springs Arkansas National Park.

Perhaps you, too, are old enough to remember the advertisement from the ’50′s in which a woman opened a refrigerator and saw Bugs Bunny in there. She said, “What are you doing in my refrigerator??” Bugs said, “This is a Westinghouse, isn’t it?” Woman: “Yes?!” Bugs: “Well, I’m westing.”

Anyway, I had just had my 20 minute soak in the hot mineral water and was waiting on a chaise covered with hot towels up to my chin for my massage therapist to give me a 20 minute Swedish massage. The day before Robin had been the therapist, now I was waiting for someone else. I had thought Robin was really great, and through a somewhat perverse checking out of the bathhouse massagers (are they really ALL good?) was going with someone else unknown today.

From my chaise I could hear Robin in the next room talking to her person, who had a pain down her leg. Then Robin came enthusiastically out and demonstrated a fix on a low table right next to me. Then she got the client to do the fix. I peeked out at the client. She looked a lot skeptical, unfortunately for her. Robin was demonstrating a perfect fix for her sacro-iliac problem if the woman’s tissue would accept it. Oh forget that, if the woman would accept it. When she half-assed the exercise, Robin said, “Don’t cheat yourself.”

The woman, half turned away, said, “People have told me a lot of exercises.”

To myself I was like, “Oh I know this one.” I even had a woman come back a few months after a series and explain to me that she had done the exercise some doctors and physical therapists had told her, even though I had told her not to do that one. When I said, “Why did you do that? You were doing so well”, the woman dryly replied, “I didn’t believe you.” At least, she was upfront.

Let me tell you, if an exercise doesn’t work for you, causes more aggravation and/or pain…it doesn’t matter who said it. In the above case, an African-American who was “called by G-d” to be a massage therapist nailed what was going on with a woman’s back which was radiating pain down her leg, and the Caucasian woman’s response was basically, I don’t believe you.

You can tell who I am identifying with here? (Hint: Not identifying with G-d.) On the externals, Robin and I have practically nothing in common.

Here’s Robin’s exercise: Put the hurting leg foot up on a stool about knee high. Arch your back forward a little (so your belly sticks out a little, don’t leave your back flat or arched backward) and take yourself including your waist forward so that your bent knee bends more and you go toward the stool, still upright.

This could do it for you. You will give parts that are separating that joint a bit a little stretch, and strengthen the joint, which could be too loose. That joint’s ilium could be stuck going backward and this will fix that, too. I do the exercise on the other side, too.

There is a lot to the sacrum-ilium-lumbar vertebrae connection, the above is only one fix and that only a mechanical fix. For perhaps an additional psycho/structural fix, try checking out what you are thinking about while you sit on one of those big exercise balls and see if you can release your pelvic floor so that you can move on the ball an inch or two in all directions, easily, still upright with your back arched a little. (Please, waist/back not curved backward so that you bend forward.)

I’m not talking about creating zombies here, dear Readers, I’m talking about some popular ways that have been taught, some for centuries, that just do you no good. You can match up your favorite dogmas with the next paragraph and see how they stack up.

Here is the main thing, as told by Ida Rolf and at least 2 other experts of the last century. Normal breath goes out and then the normal breath comes in, governed by reflex. No fooling around with it, no chest going up while the belly goes down, no stopping at the in and out turn around for holding, no pushing, shoving, no controlling, no “helicopter parent” of the breath.

How do I know this is right? I didn’t do a scientific experiment. I breathed for years (you are an expert, too, in that) and used the breath to play all kinds of instruments and a number of sports including being a Red Cross water safety instructor.

Then I ran into breathing trouble, and I looked for a guru and found Ray Still and Wilbur Simpson in Evanston Illinois. Then I found my way to a Rolfer, and to the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration (RISI) where I graduated in 1984. Besides gifted teachers at RISI I was lucky enough to get to study some with Carola Speads, and also with a wonderful singer who is a practitioner of the work of Carl Stough.

Stough’s book Dr. Breath, The Story of Breathing Coordination is simply the best book on breathing that I know. It is out of print now, even the 1981 second edition, but can be bought on the second hand market for about $65.00 (at this date, anyway.)

I found a lot of similarity of idea as I took in what was out there, even though methods for getting there could be different. In 1982 I went to hear a master class by Anna Moffo in Philadelphia where she transformed some Curtis Institute singers by having them free their chests, breathing also into their chests as well as belly with their air going—you guessed it—freely in and out, not being pushed by the diaphragm and hardened rib cage. The students were different, but as she worked with them each had more breathing coordination in the breathing mechanism. Afterwards the students didn’t hear what she said really, just wanted to prove her wrong by the fact that she had lost her voice by then, in an unfortuitous combination of dealing with the onset of her singing career all over the world in the first airplane age of singing in Europe one night, and Asia the next, etc.

Then in the ’90′s I met Karen Saillant, who had been a student of Carl Stough. It is hard to know why Stough’s work hasn’t become better known, and why there aren’t more practitioners of his work. I suspect it is because the arduous process by which he came to do the work of what he called breathing coordination was not repeatable by him, and most of his students couldn’t get the ground floor level of work.

I wish Stough’s students (except for Karen, she needs nothing) could have had the manipulative experience of working with Janie French, Annie Duggan, and Rebecca Carli-Mills that I had in the late 1980′s. There was manipulation there, which French and Duggan called “joffling”, laid on the ground floor of Rolfing manipulation. The manipulation was used to get (especially) the ribs working in the appropriate manner, the ribs go up down like a bucket handle and in and out….while breathing. The Stough method in addition to more manipulative specificity added a missing piece, a special emphasis on creating a good exhale by having the client count out loud with a focused sound while the ribs were being worked.

When the upper body and ribs are jammed there can even be arm and finger troubles by virtue of nerves that are pinched off at the rib heads or at the gristle which surrounds the ribs and connects them. The manipulation and technique can be used to help even aberrational patterns that have developed over the years of breathing, some like those of B.K.S. Iyengar being self-inflicted so that he is so stuck in the inhale pattern that he is very breathless when he speaks. You can hear this on his videos from Estes Park, Colorado teachings. I’m told by one of his disciples that he can do OM forever, that is kind of interesting that he has developed one function over another.

Carl Stough was a singer and leader of very successful children’s choirs. Later he became somewhat famous for his work with emphysema and high altitude breathing for athletes. He still chafed at the medical world’s inability to accept two of his most stunning findings.

These quotes from his book are hard to hear: “Two of the startling achievements of breathing coordination were the development of the involuntary muscles and the alteration of chest position, both of which had been considered impossible. In numerous instances, visible proof had failed to dismiss skepticism.”

A Stough experience: Lie on your back with your head supported, a small towel under your lower back, and a pillow under your knees. Take a regular breath through the nose, that easily fills your chest and belly. Open your mouth and count with a good tone up to 5 or so repeatedly. When your belly gets hard and you are forcing, let the air come in your nose. As you get better at this, you will feel a small kernel of hardness in the lower belly that will be the signal to turn the breath over, to inhale, and you won’t have to let your belly get hard and forced.

Here are a couple of folks who know how to breathe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZJqR_8uE9s&feature=relmfu and following is a clarinet player who thinks he can breathe….look, he is still standing! but notice the little pot belly and sunken chest, sure signs of abnormal breathing: http://www.playwithapro.com/?videoNo=0702 –Love the piece, though.

The recitatives of alternative/complementary medical practices– including Rolfing® Structural Integration– that did not cure dystonia victims went on and on. It was the second day, and in the afternoon 8 musicians described their experiences with diagnoses and treatment of their dystonia afflictions. Nothing in the standard medical practice cured them either, only one musician claimed to be completely cured, and that through his own initiative in retraining himself.

Better to just avoid getting dystonia, you say? The distinguished panelists, led by Steven Frucht MD, Professor of Neurology and Director of the Movement Disorders Division of Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York, New York, couldn’t find much hope there either.

There seem to be several emerging factors. Misuse syndrome and bad genetics are being investigated. An early start, say at age 4, seems to be protective of developing dystonia.

A number of panelists were from Germany, which leads the world in full time orchestra numbers and has a health care system which provides for documentation of musicians’ disorders. One conclusion one of the male German panelists made was that one in 200 musicians will get dystonia and that of that number, an overwhelming number were male. (German orchestras are still very misogynist, and he didn’t mention that fact.)

One form of treatment is an inhibition of chronically contracted muscles. A doctor from the French company IPSEN represented a botulinum toxin version that is used in Europe. Botox™ from the ALLERGAN corporation is the name commonly known in the United States for this toxin. The toxin, which is one of the most toxic known, must be stored in an inactive form and activated. Proprietary ways of doing this distinguish the 2 companies. Using the toxin for hand and lip dystonias is an off-label use, and can cost the patient up to $2800 for each injection, 2 or 3 times a year.

Because I had some knowledge of Dr. Frucht’s work, when the notice of this meeting came across my desk I undertook the 2 days of commuting to New York. I was hoping to hear more of treatment possibilities that might be on the horizon, and I did. Musicians are a small portion of a larger dystonic population, but Dr. Frucht believes they are like the canary in the coal mine in that they provide extreme sensitivity to change, much more than other generalized dystonic patients.

Dr. Frucht provided a video overview of the dystonic patient world which was worth the price of admission for me. Many kinds of dystonias exist (1/3 of them genetically related), and he showed some of them. His remarks about the repertoire of focal hand dystonias included what was almost a throw-away of a view of the repertoire of the focal hand dystonia, the resemblance to “baby babbling” gestures. In combination with some remarks later by Christine Klein MD of the University of Luebeck that “she would like to do more work on the pre-movement phase of movement” I found that good food for thought on the retraining of movement of the hands.

And retraining is just about where it is at for the moment. Some clues exist: jugglers get really good when they don’t make the same toss every time. Providing alternatives and sensory re-training can be done, in some cases.

I wish the news were better, but it is just not that great, yet, though distinguished minds are working on it, as evidenced in this Foundation meeting at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York last weekend.

Today, the headline writer for the Science Times, which comes out in the New York Times on Tuesdays, used the “weasel word” MAY on the headline.

A Heart Helper May Come at a Price for the Brain by Tara Parker-Pope (Tuesday March 6, 2012) is a measured article on last week’s Food and Drug Administration pronouncement. Parker-Pope’s article is redolent with anecdotal stories of folks who have had cognitive troubles of one kind or another. Her words about the FDA statement: “Last week, The FDA finally acknowledged what many patients and doctors have believed for a long time: Statin drugs carry a risk of cognitive side effects. The agency also warned users about diabetes risk and muscle pain.”

Since the scary problem with a certain prescription statin came on my radar some years ago because of a client’s experience with her elderly family members, I have been being a non-compliant high-cholesterol patient, and even got kicked out of one doctor’s practice. In my client’s admittedly anecdotal story, both her and her husband’s mothers had serious cognitive difficulties after taking a popular statin for close to 2 years, each. Fortunately, she and her husband were scientists, and were able to parse out the troublesome drug from the relatives’ medications, and their cognitive abilities slowly came back.

I know what cognitive difficulty looks like, it has been revealed on both sides of my parents’ generation of my relatives. They did not take statins as far as I know, but I figure if there is something genetic there, it doesn’t need any more help like a statin drug.

Here’s another statement from the article: Nobody knows how many statin users have had cognitive troubles. It is easy to discover what the percentage is of certain age groups that have cognitive problems. It is not so easy to discover what the factors are in the problems.

However, I’ve seen enough. When I told my current doctor that I was still not willing to take statin drugs, he texted me a notice of Colin Campbell PhD speaking at Pennsylvania University on his book, “The China Study”.

I didn’t go. I was busy reading, “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease” by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, which has a foreword by Colin Campbell.

This is about all I am going to write today, as I am very grouchy from eating nothing but vegetables with no salt and no fat for a week. I am going to give it a good try, 6 months anyway. Following, more than you wanted to know about the kinds of dementia: http://www.brain-injury-therapy.com/articles/dementia.htm

I have to admit that I have a certain fondness for trailer park movies. They are much more numinous in the mysterious, fascinating personal flaunting of presentation of self sense than the New York Times fashion pages, which came out today. I also have to admit that I also erroneously think of the movie, “Bagdad Cafe” as a trailer park movie, one which could take place here in any neighborhood in Philadelphia, in my beloved concrete desert.

The neighborhood was quiet today at 7:30 a.m. as Tito Perrito and I hit the sidewalk outside of our Philadelphia rowhouse. I was concerned with allowing my feet to feel soft in my minimalist shoes, and doing a little run and walk, interrupted by a few sniffings of various lamp poles and found objects. By the time we got to the coffee shop a few blocks away, me clutching my weekend NY Times and Tito ready to have a little rest, I woke to the fact that someone(s) were going to see what I had on, the clothing ornamental presentation layer was going to be on display.

I wasn’t all that concerned that I was going to show up without posture/structure, because I had been paying attention to getting spring in my step, alert, with tonic postural systems activated.

However, I quickly glanced around the coffee shop to see if anyone would notice that I had my fake fur hat on wrong side out. The hat does show that I wear it like that, some wrong-side threads stick out, but I keep forgetting to trim them, and the hat is just too small right side up. I was carrying my ceramic World of Warcraft design cup, and had 2 layers of scarves on along with an old denim jacket, some black slacks that had the pocket only a little ripped, and some Argentinian leather gloves still good after 15 years of almost constant wear. Tito had been brushed, my quick check of the various told me the baristas I liked were there and that others were seemingly unconcerned since my age makes me invisible: we would probably not get thrown out of the coffee shop, or kindly told that we could bring in our shopping cart. (Just kidding, folks.)

Back in the NY Times, reading along about the exhibition of Cindy Sherman’s personal presentation photographic works at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, I was struck by her “None of the characters are me” (speaking of her hundreds of constructed personas) ….”they are everything but me. If it seems too close to me, it’s rejected.”

What is happening here? Shall we say, Liar Liar Pants on Fire? Out of all the hundreds of photos of herself, there must be some truth somewhere…and yes, we see another self portrait at the top of the page, a trailer park girl, a little sluttish in her t-shirt, ready to jump on her motorcycle but impeded seriously by two-fisted blackness and a calculating look at the neighbors. Perhaps she will get the stuffing beat out of her soon, with only camera clicks for defense.

At least she doesn’t have on pointy toed shoes, these look like very biker chic, no bunions for her.

Presentation layer thoughts humming, I thought about Chris Amodeo, a fabulous Rolfer who lives in Southern California. Here is his new video: http://rolfmeamodeo.com/ Is his head cold?

Here is Granny as Rolfer, one of my videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiOdgpCnuHI In one of my upcoming videos, I will wear the wrongside out hat.

If you buzz through other Rolfing sites you will see some people who are having fun with their presentation layers. It is kind of a mark of honor for me that I once lost some clients because they didn’t like my Crown Vic Ford with the intimidator fender. I plan to do better though, I just cut the loose threads off the hat.

Rolfing® Structural Integration is the theory and practice of organizing the human being in the field of gravity. Its goal is to enhance the person’s structural integrity, which is manifest in the person’s ability to function economically in relation to the environment. Rolfing accomplishes this by addressing imbalances in the body’s connective tissue matrix, as well as by helping the client find more functional options regarding patterns of movement, perception and cognition.

This definition was crafted by a group of Rolfers™ last year as part of a new Rolf Institute of Structural Integration (RISI) Standards of Practice document, which was voted to be accepted by a majority of members of RISI. I like it: for 72 words, it is about as good as it gets. The above is tough for some to take, though. One old-timer connected with a prestigious institution of higher learning whined that most of the words mean nothing to his real world, which happens to be scientific.

There is a lot to Rolfing SI, and a lot of the words we use are unfamiliar to those outside of the field, although becoming better known. This happens in other fields, too. At the time I was learning the vocabulary of Rolfing, in 1982-1984, there was also a lot for me to learn about computers.

In my free time, I caught up on some of the new words of computerdom, and hardly “understood” them at all. Take that stuff about “bits” and “bytes”. Please, I said, just speak English. Finally I found someone who said, “A bit is a bit is a bit. A byte is a byte is a byte. Don’t try to translate bits and bytes into something else, not into words you think you like better.”

This made sense to me. When I came to “operating systems”, I got it, and just tried to imagine what OS was, rather than translate the “systems” badly to something I sort of understood.

I realized, the bits and bytes and operating systems are outside of proofings, they just are in the world, and have that name attached to them.

Structural Integration has some names attached to it, also. When Ida Pauline Rolf made the big leap to what she called integration, she just saw it in the world of the body as a possibility, and went for it, began to create that possibility in the “random” bodies of human beings who showed up for her.

These Randoms hardly knew what it was that she was doing, as most folks who come in for Rolfing hardly can know that organization which we call integration in gravity. As far as IPR thought though, I believe that as individuals with all kinds of problems of integration began to show up, she always took the integrative idea as far as she could with that particular human being.

Every time that place was a little different, but still….there is an operating system of structure and movement in the body.

I loved what one of my fellow Rolfers recently said in part about the limitations of the above definition: when the person stands up toward the end and gets that goofy look of happiness and you ask them if they could have predicted this outcome, and they say, “No!” how can we explain that outcome to someone who has not had that experience?

The answer, we can’t. And that outcome often happens, when you get a real Rolfer and a real person who both show up and go for integration in gravity.

The first time I ever saw a real yogi from India was in Columbia, Missouri, 1962, and he stopped his heart on the seminar stage. He did that himself, as a demonstration of that ability to control functions of the body which were thought at the time to be out of conscious control.

He couldn’t get his heart going again. After a doctor who happened to be in the audience for the seminar came up on stage and started his heart for him, the yogi apologized for “showing off”.

Way Number One: No showing off. This is known as EGO in yoga circles and exists at all levels, both teacher and student. Comparing ourselves to the person on the mat next to us? Yikes. And— teacher pushing people further into poses is simply ego.

Way Number Two: Over 40 years of age?: No inverted postures. The big reason for this is the long lasting neck, shoulder, and arm pain issues created easily by this. Less usual reasons for this including going blind with possible retinal detachment from increased pressure in the head and stroke, thoracic outlet syndrome, and the list goes on. These inverted postures are not worth the risk.

Way Number Three: Know where the first barrier to the movement is. Do not go immediately beyond it. Find it and wait. It will ease, go to the next barrier. Do not do this more than 3 times, this going to the next barrier. The other side will probably have different first end points or barriers to the stretch. This will drive your yoga teacher crazy. However, it will ultimately give you greater stretch gains.

Way Number Four: Everyone has a little “shelf” in the neck where one vertebra goes forward of the one below it. Do not bend the neck into extension such as in the “cobra” that creates more of that sharp break. Use axial extension with a gentle arching into extension. (best known as the “skyhook”, axial extension is done by elevating the head without tucking or jutting out the chin)

Way Number Five: Don’t do “hot” yoga. The ligamentous stretches that are possible in heat can be extremely damaging to the ligaments. They are what hold you together, in large part, and will allow you to have skeletal misalignments when they are too lax afterward. As always, the injury may not show up for several days, then giving sharp pain and limitation.

Way Number Six: Learn to do extensions with length in the spine. (axial extension all the way down to the tailbone.) Whatever part of the spine extends the least, and usually that is the thoracic spine, do not go further into extension than that will go. You can crush fracture your thoracics if you force them into further extension.

Way Number Seven: Do not do yoga with bound strength—tense tight muscles. You can pull yourself apart easily. Think of strength with flow. For instance, make sure you are not binding at the diaphragm front OR back. For instance, it is easy to breath only allowing one part of the diaphragm to have flow. This sets you up to pull apart your lower back.

When yogistas have a series with me, we work on their poses to refine them so that they are not injurious.

At the bottom of this page is a recent somewhat flamboyantly warning article about yoga practice. There are some mistakes in it, but overall it works for me and the experiences I have had trying to repair damage for yoga practitioners and teachers.

This is NOT to say, Don’t Do Yoga! It remains a truly important way to get in touch with your body and bring it and your mind together in a practice which is repeatable and has longevity functional returns that are big for your middle and old age.
